What does Michael Jackson have in common with 1588 inmates in the Phillipines?

Nothing… except this rather inspirational collection of videos of inmates at a Philippine prison practicing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and even Sister Act hits!

We deduced that the 1,588 inmates in the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Cebu, Philippines decided to throw their old, boring PE routines out the window and embrace the zombies, rappers, choreographers and video vixens in themselves. Here they are at practice! These are not the final routines, and definitely not punishment! Just a few teasers. We especially like the “Canon in D- Rock Version” and the “Sister Act - Hail holy queen” with real-life inmate-nuns.

You can actually call them and leave your requests with the really nice Filipino secretary.

So the moral of this story? With excellent customer service, and a remarkable product, the Philippine prison system has completely lost its mind. And it. Is. Awesome.

…is amazing. So far. It’s far cooler than LA or San Diego (the two other places I’ve spent alot of time in). It reminds me of Kenya, actually. Everything is compact, easy to find and get to, and the shopping is AMAZING!

So I’ve been here for three days and I’m already at work. It’s proving to be quite a challenge, but I’m really loving it.

I finally got to meet the fantabulous Seth Godin- coolest man ever, I must admit. Very learned in the marketing field, I must say.

I also met the rest of the staff and I’m feeling like I’m home once again… *sigh*

Is it the other multinational ad agency (e.g. O & M, Saatchi & Saatchi)? or the rather random, indigenous ad establishment down the street (Mama Mama’s or T.A.C.)?

I’ve been thinking about competition, and how it plays into my daily routine. Today I was hanging out with the coolest man on this planet (and I ain’t lying) when he mentioned something that got me really thinking. Ok… he mentioned something that I’ve been ignoring for a LONG while now and that got me really thinking about me, and how I react to stimuli.

Anyway, I thought about my competition. What is it? or rather Who is it? or even Why does it exist when I do? When you think about your competition, is it everyone or everything else (external [negative] influences) or is it you (internal [negative] influences)? Should your past performance be your competition, or the present performances of people/things/businesses/companies that don’t even matter in the whole scope of things?

hmmm…

My brother is in the country for a few weeks. A few nights ago, he came over for dinner and we had a lively discussion about Kenya’s recent elections, the post-election violence and roads.

Kaima (my brother) mentioned that the main reason that a government is in existence is to give every citizen the same foundation from which they can build their lives. A great example- the road system in America. There are roads in America- everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Los Angeles, or in a really deserted area somewhere in Kansas. Everyone has access to roads.

Take Kenya, for example.  Although the government has done well in the past 5 years to pave the country, I highly doubt that over 40% of this country has paved roads. Someone in Garabatonjo (my dad mentioned that there’s a place like that somewhere) has no access to good roads whatsoever. They have cattle, goats and camels (I think) and in order for them to get the products of their hard work to a market that’s interested they must travel hundreds of kilometers on rather useless roads in unsafe conditions. Now what if there were roads- really good roads that would make it possible for a truck to come to this goat/cattle/camel farmer, get his milk and transport it to a market? It would save the farmer’s time, energy and resources. He would have more time/energy/resources to devote to increasing the productivity of his farm.

So as I was pondering this rather insightful discussion, while walking through the streets of Nairobi, I was robbed. I will not expound on what was taken, but rather on the fact that a policeman, an enforcer of the law, was watching the whole encounter and he did absolutely nothing. NOTHING! A family member told me that the policeman’s inaction was probably due to the fact that I did not scream loud enough. Huh! Interesting theory, I thought.

Which brings me to this- who’s fault is it? Is it mine because I didn’t scream enough? Is it the poor man’s fault, who probably doesn’t have enough resources to feed himself or his family and must steal from others to survive? or is it the government’s fault- that they haven’t provided everyone with a base, a foundation from which everyone has the same opportunities?

A poor man’s road to gold?

40 or 50 years ago, Iceland was a poor, small country. Now, it’s a rich, small country.
What changed?

According to this BBC Article, the country depended alot on whaling (and fishing). They abandoned whaling in 1989. Iceland is cold. It’s a North-Atlantic Island. It’s mostly covered by lava fields and they get most of their heating from underground in the form of geysers and hot-springs. Now, Iceland enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world. Surprisingly, their economy is developing in new areas such as banking and finance.

So what happened? What’s different now? According to a BBC Business Daily excerpt, they just plain worked hard. That’s it.

Question- How virus-worthy are you? or your ideas? or your product/s? or your ____________? I’m assuming that your ____________ doesn’t have the same dreaded effects that the typical flu virus has, but rather the same broad reach. Everyone ‘gets’ it. Everyone ’spreads’ it. Everyone’s affected by it and tells everyone else about it.

Hope yours doesn’t cause headaches (Safaricom and CitiHoppa), runny noses (Sarit Fox Cinema and Westgate’s NuMetro Cinema) or dry mouths (Beechams) as some __________ tend to do.

Just a thought.
